Moscow, September 3, Interfax - Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Russia has congratulated Apostolic Nuncio in Russia Archbishop Antonio Mennini on his 60th birthday and highly commended his role in promoting the Orthodox-Catholic dialogue.

"Since the beginning of your service in the lofty and responsible post of the Vatican's envoy in Russia, you have asserted your reputation of a staunch advocate of good relations between the two states and between our churches," the Russian patriarch said in a message of greetings, posted on the website of the Moscow Patriarchate.

Alexy II said that the years of Mennini's service in Russia "were of great importance for relations between the papal diplomatic mission in Moscow and the Russian Orthodox Church, marked by mutual affection, openness and trust.

"Mennini was appointed head of the Vatican's diplomatic mission in Moscow by Pope John Paul II on November 2002. During his service in Russia Archbishop Mennini has invariably demonstrated the importance of the Catholics' respectful attitude to the Orthodox tradition.
